Macmillan is a cause very close to Johns heart and after giving up smoking in 2009 he has taken part in a marathon every year since. Not satisfied with marathons and labouring on client sites, on September 17th 2017 John took part in the Weymouth Ironman 70.3 to further raise funds and awareness. This was a huge challenge, made more difficult by Johns love of beer, wine and food!
Ironman 70.3 is one of a series of long distance triathlon races organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. The “70.3” refers to the total distance in miles covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. Thousands of athletes arrived on England’s South Coast for the ultimate one-day test of endurance.
The Ironman was my toughest endurance event so far, but it was a great personal challenge and gave me an opportunity to raise funds for Macmillan. I’m not sure I’ll do another one though as the swim nearly killed me. Think I’ll stick to running! Bring on Marathon No 10.
