The role & about the client:
ITS Construction Professionals South are working with our client, a principal contractor, who are looking to appoint Quantity Surveyors to support a major highways infrastructure project in Cumbria, starting in January 2027.
The project involves the significant renewal of ageing bridge structures along a 10km stretch of the M6 motorway.

The five-year programme will involve the repair and replacement of eight existing concrete structures, including seven structures supporting the M6 and one carrying the A685. The works will focus on extending the life of critical infrastructure, with complex engineering and construction activities taking place in a challenging motorway environment.

This is a substantial long-term infrastructure project offering the opportunity to become part of a major civil engineering programme from an early stage.
Our client is looking for commercially aware Quantity Surveyors who understand the demands of working for a principal contractor and can take ownership of their commercial responsibilities across assigned work packages.

You’ll be working closely with the wider commercial, operational and project delivery teams, helping maintain financial control, manage contractual obligations and maximise commercial performance throughout the programme.

This is a predominantly site-based role, suited to someone who enjoys being involved in project delivery, building relationships with the site team and dealing with the commercial challenges that come with major infrastructure works.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Managing the commercial and financial performance of assigned projects or work packages, maximising planned gross margin.
• Managing the placement, administration and commercial control of subcontract and supply chain agreements.
• Preparing and submitting interim valuations, applications for payment, claims and associated commercial documentation.
• Monitoring budgets, forecasts, cash flow and work package performance.
• Providing accurate commercial reporting and forecasting to support project decision-making.
• Identifying, assessing and mitigating commercial and contractual risks.
• Managing variations, compensation events and changes to the project scope in accordance with the relevant contract.
• Supporting procurement activities, including subcontract enquiries, tender assessments and commercial negotiations.
• Reviewing subcontractor quotations, contractual terms and proposed scopes of work.
• Measuring and valuing completed work, including assessing quality and progress where required.
• Assessing subcontractor applications for payment and certifying interim and final payments.
• Maintaining effective cost control and maximising cash flow through accurate valuation and timely invoicing.
• Supporting the preparation, negotiation and agreement of final accounts.
• Ensuring commercial activities comply with the project’s procurement strategy and contractual requirements.
• Working collaboratively with site management, engineering, procurement and planning teams to support successful project delivery.
• Providing commercial guidance and support to junior team members, helping develop their knowledge and capability.
• Maintaining accurate commercial records and ensuring company procedures for risk management, health, safety and environmental compliance are followed.
• Building strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and the wider project team.
• Supporting a positive, inclusive working environment where team wellbeing and different perspectives are valued.

The ideal candidate will have/be:

• Previous experience in a Quantity Surveying or commercial role with a main contractor or principal contractor.
• Experience working on civil engineering, highways, structures or major infrastructure projects would be highly advantageous.
• A relevant degree or academic qualification in Quantity Surveying or another construction-related discipline.
• A strong understanding of commercial management, cost control, forecasting and financial reporting.
• Experience managing subcontract packages, procurement, valuations and final accounts.
• Knowledge of different forms of construction contract and their commercial requirements.
• The ability to identify contractual risks, manage variations and protect commercial interests.
• Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Confident IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and other commercial reporting systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work collaboratively with site teams, clients, subcontractors and senior management.
• Strong organisation skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A proactive approach, with the confidence to take ownership of assigned work packages.
• The ability to support and mentor junior members of the commercial team where required.
• A full UK driving licence.
• Flexibility to travel and work away from home where project requirements dictate.

The opportunity:

The M6 Lune Gorge scheme will involve significant bridge renewal works along one of the UK’s key motorway routes, offering valuable exposure to complex civil engineering, structural works and the commercial management of a large-scale infrastructure programme.
