The Role & About the Client

ITS Building People are currently recruiting for an experienced Design / Technical Manager on behalf of a well-established construction contractor delivering major projects across the South East.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design / Technical Manager to take ownership of the design and technical process across pre-construction and delivery, working closely with senior leadership, operational and commercial teams to drive projects forward.

The successful candidate will act as a key technical lead, managing design development, coordination, compliance and information flow while ensuring projects remain buildable, commercially viable and aligned with programme requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

• Leading the design and technical process from pre-construction through to completion.
• Managing design deliverables, information release schedules and key programme milestones.
• Reviewing drawings, specifications and design proposals for compliance, buildability, sequencing and temporary works considerations.
• Developing and maintaining design programmes, ensuring surveys, approvals, technical submissions, samples and construction information are delivered on time.
• Leading design team meetings and driving actions through to completion.
• Working closely with operational teams to support construction programmes, cost plans, quality plans and procurement strategies.
• Managing design coordination and ensuring effective communication between clients, consultants, contractors and internal teams.
• Supporting compliance with Building Regulations and the requirements applicable to higher-risk buildings.
• Managing Gateway 2 submissions and maintaining the golden thread of information through to Gateway 3 where applicable.
• Working with commercial teams to develop consultant and supply chain scopes, design responsibilities, liabilities and associated agreements.
• Ensuring design information is properly managed, reviewed and approved through relevant document management systems.
• Identifying potential client delays and proactively managing their impact on programme and delivery.
• Building strong relationships with clients, consultants, design teams and internal stakeholders.
• Working closely with senior leadership and operational teams to drive progress and deliver project objectives.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• Previous experience working as a Design Manager, Technical Manager, Design / Technical Manager or similar within a main contracting environment.
• Strong experience managing the design process through pre-construction and into delivery.
• A strong understanding of construction design, technical coordination, buildability and compliance.
• Experience working with architects, consultants, specialist contractors and supply chain partners.
• Good knowledge of Building Regulations and current construction compliance requirements.
• Experience with higher-risk buildings and Gateway processes would be highly advantageous.
• Strong understanding of design programmes, information release schedules and design responsibility.
• Experience working closely with commercial and operational teams.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
• A proactive approach with the ability to identify issues, challenge where necessary and drive solutions.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to build effective working relationships and get the best from design teams.
• A commercially aware and delivery-focused mindset.
• The ability to work autonomously while operating effectively as part of a senior management team.
• A genuine drive to deliver results and see projects through from design development to completion.
