The role & about the client:
ITS (Construction Professionals South) are working with a well-established independent civil engineering contractor who deliver a diverse range of complex projects across the infrastructure, marine, energy, utilities and buildings sectors.
As part of their continued expansion across the South East, they are looking to recruit an experienced Civil Engineering Project Manager to join their operations team in Kent.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the delivery of civil engineering projects within a busy operational port environment, where careful planning, coordination and communication are essential to successful delivery.
This is a hands-on Project Management position, suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership of projects and working closely with site teams, clients, subcontractors and technical teams to turn programmes into successful project outcomes.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Take ownership of projects from initial mobilisation through to practical completion and handover.
- Establish clear delivery plans and ensure construction activities are properly planned and coordinated.
- Manage project programmes, short-term planning and sequencing of works.
- Monitor progress and take proactive action where programme or delivery issues arise.
- Coordinate the activities of site teams, subcontractors, consultants and specialist contractors.
- Manage the procurement and appointment of subcontractors and monitor their performance throughout the works.
- Work closely with design teams to ensure information, approvals and technical requirements are in place ahead of construction.
- Maintain effective communication with clients and other stakeholders throughout the project.
- Manage interfaces between construction activities and the ongoing operation of the port.
- Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with company procedures, CDM requirements and all relevant health, safety and environmental standards.
- Maintain appropriate quality control, inspection and project documentation.
- Monitor commercial performance and work alongside the commercial team to manage costs, risks and contractual matters.
- Identify potential project issues at an early stage and implement appropriate mitigation.
- Lead the project through testing, completion and final handover.
- Provide regular updates on progress, programme, risks and key project issues.
The ideal candidate will have/be:
- A proven track record working as a Project Manager within civil engineering or construction.
- Experience managing projects in a challenging operational environment.
- A strong understanding of construction planning, programme management and project delivery.
- Experience managing subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Good knowledge of UK construction health and safety legislation, including CDM 2015.
- Commercially aware, with experience working alongside commercial and quantity surveying teams.
- Confident dealing with clients, consultants, subcontractors and operational stakeholders.
- Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities and make effective decisions in a fast-moving environment.
- A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction or a related discipline, such as a degree, HNC or HND, would be advantageous.
- Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
Desirable experience:
- Previous experience delivering projects within ports, marine, coastal or maritime environments.
- Experience working within live operational sites where construction activities need to be carefully coordinated around existing operations.
- Knowledge of temporary works and lifting operations.
- First Aid qualification.
- Experience working on infrastructure, utilities or other complex civil engineering projects.

Location & travel:
This is a site-based position within a secure operational port environment in Kent, with travel between project locations required as part of the role.
